"Scars of Evolution" - with Sir David Attenborough Monty Funk Podcast - Sir David Attenborough

A two-part exploration of the 'Aquatic Ape' hypothesis first proposed 50 years ago. Presented by Sir David Attenborough, this programme was first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in April 2005.

Programme one: considers Raymond Dart's Taung Child discovery and the ensuing savannah theory of human origins, as popularised by Robert Ardrey and Desmond Morris.

Programme two: looks at evidence accumulated in the last 10-15 years driving the anthropological herd inexorably down to the water's edge. It includes reports on brain evolution, highlighting the essential fatty acids and nutrients that can only be sourced in the marine food chain; the global coastal migrations of early hominids, including major water crossings 1 million years ago.

"The Torres Straits Expedition" Monty Funk Podcast - Torres Strait Expedition

This two-part series explores the fascinating story of the Cambridge University expedition to the Torres Straits in 1898.

Alfred Haddon led the expedition, part sponsored by the Royal Geographical Society, as an anthropological study into the culture of the Torres Straits islanders. The unusal aspect was the use of several wax cylinder recorders they took with them.

Only ten years after their invention by Thomas Eddison, the recorders were intended as 'note taking' devices and the cylinders themselves were destined to be re-used. But around 50 of them survived and have been restored by the British Library. They are used in this programme with gratitude, and they reveal a story of  culture and respect.

The programme was originally broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2006.

"Travels with a Donkey - Robert Louis Stevenson" Monty Funk Podcast - Travels with a Donkey

Richard Collins explores the classic travel story by Robert Louis Stevenson in this 5-part series about what is regarded by many as one of the greatest literary works in the English language.

The book was Stevenson's first published literary work, and is about his 12-day, 120-mile solo walk in 1878 through the Cevennes in southwestern France.

The Protestants and Catholics of the area kept strict religious segmentation, and the regiod was cursed with deep poverty.

But it is Stevenson’s extraordinary understanding and appreciation of the landscape makes this such a powerful book.
